What is gas?

Gas refers to a fee required to confirm a transaction on the Ethereum blockchain. Gas is priced in Gwei, which represents one billionth of an Ether.

How are gas fees calculated?

Calculating the total transaction fee on Ethereum works as follows: Gas units (limit) * (Base fee + Priority fee). You can see a breakdown of this equation on Ethereum's official website.

What is a Priority fee?

A priority fee is a tip paid directly to the miner to incentivize them to include your transaction in a block. The higher the tip, the more likely your transaction will be confirmed.

Why can gas fees be so high?

Gas fees can increase when the demand to confirm transactions on Ethereum is high. Since the number of transactions that can be confirmed per block is limited, high demand can cause soaring gas prices as users compete for block space.
